There will be a by-election for the mayoral post of Feni municipality today. The local administration has declared all the 30 centres associated with the election as vulnerable.
The 14-party alliance backed candidate Jatiya party leader Haji Ala Uddin is contesting the election with the symbol of pineapple while he is challenged by BNP led 18-party alliance backed candidate Alal Uddin Alal who is participating in the polls with ink-pen symbol. The two contesting candidate is the resident of the same household in Rampur area of the town and they are uncle and nephew by relation.
BNP backed candidate Alal accused his rival of conspiring to occupy the election centres on the day of election under the auspices of ruling Awami League.
On the contrary, AL backed candidate Ala Uddin said he had the support of the resident of all walks of life of Feni municipality and had turned down his opposition’s claim terming them as bogus.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) and the Returning Officer Enamul Haque told the newsmen that all the required preparations had been made and BGB personnel along with police and Rab would remain deployed to avert any untoward incident.
A total of 77,508 voters of 18 wards of the municipality are expected to cast their votes in this election. Among them, the number of male voters is 40,021 while the number of female voters is 37,487.
It is to be noted that the mayoral post became vacant when Haji Nizam Uddin Hazari, the outgoing mayor of the Feni municipality had been elected uncontested as the Member of the Parliament in January 5 general election.
