‘Announce Rana Plaza disaster day as national garment workers mourning day’

Members of Garment Workers Front of Narayanganj chapter demanded that the government announce April 24 as the national garment workers mourning day.

The garment workers made the demand at a protest rally held at Narayanganj Press Club yesterday.

Speakers at the rally said the government should announce the day as a mourning day because hundreds of garment workers had died and got heavily injured on the day in the Rana Plaza disaster.

A total of 1,132 workers died and 2,500 workers were injured in the Rana Plaza collapse incident, they said, adding that 300 workers are still missing.

The world has not seen such a big disaster ever because of the negligence of the building owner.

“Although one year of the incident has almost passed, the government is yet to ensure punishment for those people, who are responsible for the disaster,” said a garment worker, who preferred to be unnamed.

He also demanded compensations for all Rana Plaza victims and urged the government to publish the complete list of dead and missing workers as soon as possible. He also demanded punishment of the Rana Plaza owner.

Other speakers said although different organisations had donated over Tk100 crore for Rana Plaza victims, but the government had provided only Tk18 crore to them.

Later, protesters brought out a procession from the press club premises that paraded different roads.

Selim Mahmud, president of the front, Nikhil Dash, member of district Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (Basad), Abu Naim Khan Biplob, leader of Basad, Jahangir Alam Golok, general secretary of the front, Saiful Islam Sharif and vice-president of the organisation addressed the programme.
