Police charge baton on Moncho activists, foil rally

Police have charged batons on the activists of Gonojagoron Moncho "in order to" foil a rally in protest against Thursday’s attack on the activists of the anti war criminal platform in the capital’s Shahbagh on Friday afternoon.

Witnesses said many activists of Gonojagoron Moncho have sustained injuries during the “police attack” on them. Badhon, one of the organisers of the rally, received serious injuries as police beat him up. Later, he was admitted to a city hospital immediately after the incident.

Meanwhile police nabbed five Moncho activists –Farid, Sohag, Dhiman, Tito and joy from the rally venue.

Condemning the attack, Gonojagoron Moncho spokesperson Imran H Sarker said: "We strongly protest and condemn the attack. Those who called counter programme today, has been used as a political component against the Moncho activists.

As we protested the government's decision of taking donation from Islami Bank , we came under attack of the ruling party's student-wing members," he added.

While contacted, Shahbagh police station Officer-in-Charge Sirajul Islam said: “The police were compelled to take action as the activists of Gonojagoron Moncho and Muktijuddha Sangsad Sontan engaged again in a brawl ahead of their per-scheduled programmes at the same spot at the same time.

We have also detained two members of Muktijuddha Sangsad Sontan from the spot,” he added.

Earlier on Thursday night, ruling party-backed Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jubo League allegedly attacked activists of Gonojagoron Moncho in the area.

One activist sustained serious injury while several others were reportedly beaten up when the incident took place around 8pm.

Police termed it an internal clash of the platform activists.

Later, the activists of Gonojagoron Moncho announced to stage a rally in protest against the attack on them. Meanwhile, Muktijuddha Sangsad Sontan members announced another programme at the same place at the same time.
