At least four people have been killed and several others injured as a recklessly-driven bus got onto the footpath in front of Hajarat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital on Wednesday morning.
The deceased were identified as Abdul Kuddus Chowdhury, 50, an employee of the Biman Bangladesh Airlines, Bilkis Begum, 35, of Uttara, Tajuddin, 40, and Sabur Khan, 40.
Nisarul Arif, deputy commissioner at Uttara Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said: “The incident took place around 10:30am when the driver lost his control over the steering and got onto the footpath, leaving four people dead on the spot and injured several others.
Later, the injured were rushed to Combined Military Hospital (CMH), where another victim succumbed to injuries,” he added.
Sub-inspector Shafiqur Rahman of Airport Police Station said their bodies had been taken to the police station first for preparing inquest reports on them and later, were sent to the morgue at Dhaka Medical College for autopsies.
Police said the Abdullahpur-bound killer bus of ‘Zabal-e-Nur Paribahan’ has been seized. But, the driver and helper of the bus managed to flee the scene.
Police said they were trying to identify the driver.
Officer-in-Charge Shah Alam said a CNG-run auto-rickshaw was also hit by the bus leaving its driver injured while it had been passing through the area.
The auto-rickshaw driver identified as Atiqur Rahman. He was also admitted to a city hospital.
