Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed has asked the ministry officials and trade leaders to keep alert to the price hike.
The minister cautioned the business leaders in a meeting held at his ministry conference room on Monday.
“You have to alert so that the middlemen cannot hike the prices of essential commodities illegally as there is adequate reserve in the country,” Tofail said.
“The result of hiking the commodity prices illegally will not be better for anybody,” he uttered cautionary signal.
The meeting was held to review reserve and current market price of commodities like edible oil, sugar, dates, dals and grams in the country aiming to control the market price of those elements during next Ramadan.
Urging the opposition to abstain from committing any destructive activities in the name of political movement, Tofail Ahmed said: “The leaders of the opposition could understand that none can reach in the destination by committing any subversive activities.”
“They should not try again to do the same by raising a settled matter as unsettled.”
“They should try to do something better for the people of the country, if they do politics for the people,” he added indicating the recent statement of BNP Chairpersons Khaleda Zia regarding ‘first president of the country’.
The business leaders including FBCCI President Kazi Akram Uddin Ahammad and Bangladesh Edible Oil Association President Fazlur Rahman assured the meeting that they have now adequate reserve of the essential commodities in the country.
The importers have already opened letters of credit (L/C) to import sufficient essential commodities for ensure supply during the Ramadan and round the year, they said.
It would not be a problem to ensure sufficient supply for round the year and the market price will not increase in this year, they also assured.
