All the candidates except ruling Awami League-backed candidates have boycotted poll in Ghatail upazila of Tangail on Monday.
The BNP, its rebel, Jatiya Party and Islami Andolon backed chairman and vice-chairman candidates went to Assistant Returning Officer Kamal Hossain’s office in the morning and declared boycotting the election.
UNO and Assistant Returning Officer Kamal Hossain said the candidates boycotted election alleging that the supporters of Awami League-backed candidates occupied 35 centres and stamped seal on Sunday night.
The supporters of the candidates blocked Dhaka-Mymensingh highway following the poll boycott.
Meanwhile, police opened fire on the angry supporters that left five injured.
Ghatail police station Office-in-Charge Fazlul Kabir said police opened fire to make the vehicular movement normal on the highway.
The candidates who boycotted election are -- BNP-backed chairman candidate AKM Rezaul Karim, BNP rebel candidate Abdur Rashid Mia, Jatiya Party-backed candidate Abdul Alim and Islami Andolon-backed candidate Ansar Ali.
Awami League rebel vice-chairman candidate Shahiduzzaman Khan, BNP-backed Abu Bakar Siddique, Jatiya Party-backed Arifur Rahman Khan and Jamaat-backed Hosni Mobarak Babul also boycotted poll.
The female vice-chairman candidates who boycotted poll are – BNP-backed Laki Chowdhury and Independent candidate Nurjahan Siddiqa.
Now, Awami League-backed chairman candidate Nazrul Islam, vice-chairman candidate Arifur Rahman and female vice-chairman candidate Kaniz Fatema are contesting in the election.
