Rajshahi doctors halt strike until Sunday

Doctors in Rajshahi, who have been demanding release of a colleague accused for death of a patient, have suspended their strike until Sunday noon.

Local unit of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) made the decision after a meeting on Friday night. Strike will be off until 12noon on Sunday.

BMA Rajshahi unit President SR Tarafdar endorsed the update on Saturday morning. “Strike will continue if Dr Shimul is not released by Sunday noon.”

Doctor Shamiul Ahmmad Shimul was imprisoned on Thursday over a case that alleged death of a patient for wrong treatment.

On December 29, a patient Anwarul Haque, injured in pre-election violence, said to have died after Dr Shimul administered an injection in Dolpin Clinic.

The victim’s wife Sharmin Akhter sued the doctor over death of her husband.

On Thursday, Rajshahi Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Biswanath Chandra Mondal sent Dr Shimul to prison after the doctor was detained by police.

Doctors of most government and private hospitals and clinics of Rajshahi went on strike from Thursday demanding release of their colleague.
