Govt bars hotel workers to hold rally

Bangladesh hotel, restaurant, sweetmeat and bakery workers’ union could not hold its scheduled central rally at the auditorium of Dhaka District Sports Association on Friday morning as Motijheel police turned back from its previous decision of allowing the union to hold the rally.

Central committee President Aktaruzzaman Khan and General Secretary Anwar Hossian critisised the decision of the government for not allowing the union to hold the rally after giving verbal permission earlier.

It was proved that the government wanted to stop democratic rights of the labourers violating ILO convention, the leaders said.

We would establish our rights through movements, they added.

Anwar Hossain told Dhaka Tribune that the organisation had taken all preparations to hold the rally. But the government foiled it at the last moment.

Abdul Khaleque, president, Bangladesh hotel restaurant and sweetmeat workers federation was scheduled to inaugurate the programme that was scheduled to be held at 11am.

The programme was scheduled to be held for pressing the demands of the hotel workers, the central secretary added.
