Authorities of Palli Bidyut Samity have disconnected the electricity connections powering two deep tube wells in Koddonarayanpur village of Naogaon’s Mohadebpur upazila recently for breaking government water pumping rules.
According to sources, a Palli Bidyut team of Superintendent Engineer Md Fazlul Haque and General Manager Nurur Rahman visited the village on Saturday and found that both the tube wells were being operated during the daytime, flouting the government rule. Later, they disconnected the power supply to the wells.
After the incident, local farmers were unable to irrigate and apply fertiliser on around 400 bighas of land during the current Boro season due to lack of water.
Farmers said they were worried about the paddies as sprouts had already came out and it would hamper the production if the lands were not irrigated properly. They said they would face a massive loss if they do not receive water.
Operators of both tube wells Rabbani and Ashraf Ali said the authorities of the samity disconnected the power lines without any notice or reason.
The samity’s GM Nurur Rahman said: “According to government rules, tube wells can only be operated from 11pm to 9am. We disconnected electricity lines of both tube wells as they broke the rule.”
“We have already informed the matter to Rural Electrification Board and the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources,” he added.
