Over 20 people sustained injuries in an intra-party clash between two groups of leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, students’ wing of ruling Awami League, following a feud over the control of supremacy at the Government Bangla College in the capital’s Mirpur on Wednesday.
Police detained a total of 53 of them and went into action through charging batons and lobbing up teargas canisters to stop the fighting and bring the situation under control.
Police and witnesses said during the clash, both the groups, equipped with various types of weapons, locked into chase and counter chase from 8:00pm when several rounds of gunshots were also said to be exchanged among them.
Besides, the clashing people also went into rampage through the vandalism of many vehicles on the road in front of the college.
Imtiyaz Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner at Mirpur Division of Police, said both the groups locked into a fierce clash over the control of power and establishment of supremacy among them in and around the campus area.
“Police resorted to go action and detained 53 of the clashing people to bring the situation under control”, said the DC and added, “We have also seized a huge number of various weapons from the possessions.”
He said the process for filing cases against them was on.
According to the sources, the clash took place on wednesday night was followed by a long standing feud between groups of BCL men over the control of the dormitory located inside the college campus.
They also had locked into another clash earlier on Tuesday while in last month over 50 other BCL men were held during another clash between them.
The sources said the committee of the college unit has been abolished following the feudal condition among the BCL men.
