Bangladesh has requested Sri Lanka to provide technical assistance for assessing the fish and fisheries resources in the deep sea areas that Bangladesh achieved from Myanmar by the verdict of international court.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Sayedul Haque on Tuesday placed the proposal to Sri Lankan Hi-commissioner in Dhaka Sarath K Weragoda while holding a meeting with the diplomat at the Secretariat.
Responding the call, the Sri Lankan diplomat has given assurance on behalf of his country to provide all kinds of assistance in this regard.
Requesting the minister to send a formal request to his country, he said “Sri Lanka must take necessary steps if Bangladesh sends any formal proposal.”
Ministry’s Senior Information Officer Mohammad Ali Sarker said Sayedul Haque informed the diplomat that Bangladesh would be importing a fish and fisheries resources assessing ship by next December. The ship would be imported from Malaysia with the financial assistance of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB).
The minister told him that Bangladesh would place the formal proposal after getting assessment ships in hand.
He said that Bangladesh had already given 4,000 carps of Katla Fish in 2013. The carp fishes will become as parent fishes within three years.
