The Election Commission (EC) sent a letter to cabinet division secretary drawing attention of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina about violation of electoral code of conducts by the Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu.
The EC also sent letters to parliament secretariat drawing attention of Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury for the violation of electoral code of conducts during the upazila polls by lawmakers Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju and Benjir Ahmed.
However, the commission did not send any letter and take any action against them.
Assistant Secretary of EC Ashfakur Rahman Monday told the Dhaka Tribune that the commission sent letters on Sunday to the cabinet division and parliament secretariat about the matter.
The commission sent letter signed by Joint Secretary Jesmin Tuli to cabinet division and sent another letter signed by Senior Assistant Secretary Mosharaf Hossain to parliament secretariat.
Earlier, the previous commission led by ATM Shamsul Huda started taking action against some ministers and MPs for violating the electoral code of conducts during the third phase of upazila parishad polls and filed cases against them.
But the incumbent commission has only sent letters to prime minister and parliament speaker about drawing attention regarding it.
The letter sent to cabinet division stated that “Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu at a rally on March 21 in Rajapur Upazila in Jhalakathi wanted vote for Awami League-backed candidate Moniruzzaman which is violation of the electoral code of conducts of uapzila polls.”
The letter also mentioned that speaker, deputy speaker, chief whip, minister, state minister or same ranks who get government facilities could not attend any election campaigning in the polls.
The commission thinks that it is needed to draw attention of prime minister about the matter, the letter also said.
EC officials said a candidate submitted the allegation about the violation of electoral code of conducts by the industries ministers and the matter was reported in mass media.
In another letter to parliament secretariat stated that lawmaker Rajiuddin Raju and his wife Kalpana Raju threatened voters and asked them to work for Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury in Raipura uapzila and he stayed Narsingdi circuit house which is violation of the electoral code of conducts.
The same allegation was submitted against lawmaker Benjir Ahmed.
