Biman MD to quit in April

Kevin John Steele, managing director of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, has resigned from his post with effect from May.

He submitted resignation in December last year citing medical reasons, where he mentioned would continue to work till April 2014.

“I resigned on medical grounds in December giving a four-month notice,” Kevin Steele, a Briton, told the Dhaka Tribune last evening.

It, however, could not be confirmed if the Board of Directors had accepted the resignation. Biman’s first foreign MD and CEO joined the national flag carrier on March 18 last year on a two-year contract.

Steele’s salary figure became a subject of controversy in Biman as he was receiving Tk18.3 lakh per month along with a flat in Dhaka’s posh area, transport facility and 12 business class air tickets annually.

But no previous MD of the organisation received more than Tk3 lakh.

After joining, Kevin Steele announced that he would work to make Biman a profitable company in two years.

With an aim to make Biman one of the world’s best airlines, he placed focus on reducing cost and revenue earning. But in first year of his service, the national carrier incurred Tk200 crore loss.
