Fourth phase upazila poll: Vote counting underway

The counting of votes is underway as the fourth phase of upazila elections across 91 upazilas of the country has ended amidst sporadic clashes, ballot snatching, poll boycotts and casualty.

The voting began from 8am on Sunday and continued until 4pm without any break. The votes are being counted at the polling stations after the election.

In Munsiganj, Shamsuddin Prodhan, 65, chairman of Gazaria union parishad, was killed in a clash between two groups of ruling Awami League near Baluakandi Dr Abdul Gaffar School and College centre around 11am.

Voting in four polling centres in Munshiganj including Abdul Gaffar School and College was suspended fearing further violence.

A total of 1,186 candidates are contesting for the position of chairman, vice chairman and woman vice chairman in the 91 upazilas.

There are 447 aspirants contesting for the chairman posts, 519 for the vice chairman and 311 for the seat of woman vice chairman.

The total number of voters in these upazilas amount to 13,859,278 – among whom 6,907,956 are males and 6,951,322 are females.
