One has been killed in police firing during ballot box snatching attempt from Humkhara Government Primary School polling centre in Naria, Shariatpur on Saturday afternoon.
The dead has been identified as Ripon Maji, 23.
Shariatpur Additional Police Super, Ehsan, told the Dhaka Tribune: “Police fired open when a miscreant entered into the polling centre and tried to snatch a ballot box.”
He said: “It is not confirmed whether he was shot dead or not, as nobody was seen injured during the open fire.”
Police super, however, said: “We later knew that a bullet-hit youth died on the way to hospital.”
“Supporters from two factions of the ruling Awami League locked in clash outside the polling centre and huge crowd gathered there. At one stage, attempt was made to snatch the ballot box,” KM Abul Kashem, OC of Naria police station told the Dhaka Tribune.
“During the clash, police fired open rubber bullets, however, nobody was injured,” he claimed.
The third phase of the upazila poll ended in the 81 upazila parishads across the country on Saturday.
