The ill-fated nine-month-old boy, who was left abandoned on the floor of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, has been named Siam (patience).
Rozina, one among the Ansar staff members at the hospital, has named the boy after talking to the attendants of other patients on Friday evening, 38 hours after the boy was spotted lying alone on the hospital floor.
While talking to the Dhaka Tribune, Rozina, who is taking care of the ill-fated boy, said: “24 hours have passed, still no one claimed the boy. I am trying to take care of him. No one forced me doing so. I am just doing this as I feel sorrow for the boy.”
Replying to a query whether the boy will be sent to any children home or any organisation has been contacted to take the custody of Siam, on-duty doctor Nilufar said: “Director Sir have talked to some human rights organisations and NGOs. But, we do not have any clear idea about the issue. We are just taking care of him.”
When contacted, DMCH Director Brig Gen Mostafizur Rahman was not available over phone.
Shahbagh police station Officer-in-Charge Sirajul Islam said: “DMCH director has informed us verbally. We are yet to get any written report. After getting formal report we will take step in this regard.
We cannot take the custody of the boy as we do not have such facilities. We will contact with the authorities of different NGOs and human rights organizations,” he added.
The ill-fated child was found lying alone on the floor of the hospital’s dental ward on Thursday morning. Abdul Khaleq, chief of Ansar staff at the hospital, first noticed the boy lying on the floor of Dental Ward around 8:30am.
Later, Saim was admitted at the children’s ward as per the directive of DMCH Director and has been kept in children’s ward as he is undergoing treatment of fever.
Primarily it is being suspected that the guardians of the child might have left him abandoned as the head of the child was abnormally a little larger than usual.
