Clash at wedding ceremony injures 50

A wedding ceremony turned into a violent clash which left more than 50 people injured in Madhyapara village under Barmee union of Shreepur upazila in Gazipur on Friday afternoon.

The clash erupted over the bride’s discontent as the bridegroom’s side had brought more guests with them without consulting.

Several motorcycles were also vandalised in the clash that began at 3pm and continued till 5pm.

The injured were rushed to local upazila health complexes.

Locals and witnesses said the marriage of Sharmin, daughter of Babul of the village with Pabel, son of Babul Mia of village Tok from the neighbouring Kapasia upazila was registered a month back. 

Friday had been set for the ceremony and the bride was supposed to go to the in-law’s house.

And both sides decided that 100 guests would attend from the bride and groom’s side.

However, 50 more guests came, and over this they locked into clash at a point of altercation.

Sub-Inspector Abdus Salam of Shreepur Model police station said the process of resolving the dispute was underway with the mediation of the chairman of the union Abdur Rajjak Bepari.
