Eighteen persons died in seven separate road accidents across the country in the last two days including two minors and four members of a family.
Four employees of Mostafapur Spinning Mill died while 10 sustained injuries when a bus of Sakura Express rammed into a nosimon carrying the workers in front of the mill on Wednesday, reports our Madaripur correspondent.
The five deceased are Shipon Halder, 25, Champa Akhter, 14, Happy Akhter, 18, Shefali Begum, 40 and the driver of the human haulier whose identity could not be known.
The injured are Dola, 19, Nipa, 23, Lovely, 20, Laboni, 23, Jannat Begum, 25, Lamia Begum, 32, Selina 19, Chayna, 30, and Lili Begum, 29 – all admitted to Madaripur Central Hospital. Another injured Kona Akhter was admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. The bus driver fled the scene.
Ali, 30, died in a road accident at Majhipara in Palashbari upazila of Gaibandha yesterday in the afternoon, reports our Gaibandha correspondent.
Rajiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Palashbari police station, said they had seized the microbus that had hit Ali while he was on his way to home on a bicycle.
In Comilla four died including a schoolgirl in separate road accidents yesterday. Police and witnesses said in Uttarpara of Burichong upazila, an auto-rickshaw ran over Maisha, 7, while she was crossing the road. She was a student of class I in the area’s Brac School.
On the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway, a lorry ran over a motorcycle carrying two and left them dead on spot. The deceased are Jalal Uddin, 30 and Jabed, 20.
A child named Mahbub Alam, 9, died being hit by a motorcycle on the Companygonj-Muradnagar road in Muradnagar upazila. He was son of a carpenter Alauddin.
A truck, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a human haulier collided in Islamabad of Shorail upazila under Brahmanbaria district yesterday leaving six dead, including five members of a family.
The deceased are Shahjahan Mia, 40, his wife Rowshan Ara, 35, son Ashraful, 8, daughters - Shwapna, 6 and Rotna, 4 and the driver of the auto-rickshaw Abul Hashem, 42.
The driver of the human hauler was admitted to the district sadar hospital in a critical state.
Officer-in-Charge of Shorail police station Ali Arshad said the accident occurred when a salt-laden human hauler tried to overtake a Sylhet-bound cement laden truck on the same track. Both collided with a Brahmanbaria-bound auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction.
The truck driver had fled from the spot. The three vehicles were recovered and kept at the police outpost, he said.
Three died and three got injured in the rail crossing area of Fatehpur upazila under Feni when a pickup ran over a CNG-run auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction yesterday.
The deceased are Sayra Begum, 40, wife of Mohammad Hanif of Choddogram of Comilla, Sujon, 30, son of Taher Uddin and Jasim Uddin, 45.
The injured are Nurjahan, 80, Apu, 11 and another unidentified, all admitted to Feni sadar hospital.
Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge of Feni police station Abul Kalam Azad said the bodies of the deceased had been sent to Feni Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
