At least 30 people have been injured in a clash between the supporters of the pro-Awami League candidates in the upazila parishad elections in Shreepur of Gazipur on Saturday.
The fierce clash continued for half an hour from 11:30 to 12pm.
While the clash was on, six motorbikes were set ablaze and a municipality office was vandalised, said witnesses.
Shops along the main road through the municipality were shuttered as soon as the clash broke out.
Despite the clash being stopped, further clashes are feared by the locals to be erupted at any moment as the tension still remains high among the confronting groups.
Among the injured, a BCL leader of local college Alamin was transferred to the ICU of Crescent Hospital in Uttara as his condition deteriorated, his relatives claimed.
The clash was between the supporters of Iqbal Hossain Sobuj, said to have been supported by the District Awami League and Abdul Jalil, backed by the Upazila Awami League.
The clash began in front of the upazila Awami League office as the supporters of both groups gathered there after their respective processions.
Police shot two rounds of tear shells to disperse the clashing people and the number of law enforcers has been increased in the area, OC Amir Hossain of Shreepur police station said.
