2 die after capital 'gunfight'

Two suspected members of a gang of kidnappers have been killed in a “gunfight” between the gang and a RAB team in the capital’s Kadamtoli on Monday afternoon.

RAB personnel also recovered two pistols from the spot and police recovered a machete, a homemade long sharp weapon, a bomb and a torch light, RAB and police officials said.

The deceased were identified as Songram Chowdhury, 42, and Mahmudul Wasim, 62.

RAB officials said they also rescued four persons, who had been abducted and tortured by holding them hostage at a house on Madina Masjid Road of Alambagh in Jurain under Kadamtoli police station.

Of them, Mohammad Rana, 18, was kidnapped from Ashulia, Jahangir Miah, 30, from Zirabo, Hridoy Mahmud, 32, from Sign Board and Akhter Hossain, 40, from Sanarpar, said Rab officials.

Wing Commander ATM Habibur Rahman, director of legal and media wing of RAB, told the Dhaka Tribune that the gunfight between the RAB members and a gang of kidnappers took place when the law enforcers had been on a drive of rescuing some abducted persons from a house on Madina Masjid Road.

“The RAB members were acting on a tip-off that a gang of criminals had kidnapped some people and also had been torturing them by holding them hostage at the house,” said Wing Commander Habibur Rahman.

He said: “Immediate after the RAB personnel rushed to the spot, the criminals opened fire at the RAB members, who also retaliated with gunshots triggering a gun battle.

At one stage of the gunfight, two of the criminals and four RAB members sustained injuries.”

He further said the bullet wounded criminals were rushed to the Mitford Hospital where the doctors declared them dead.
