Jared Leto, the teen heartthrob who ditched Hollywood to become a rock star, has bagged the Oscars for his role as an HIV positive transgender in “Dallas Buyers Club.”
Leto had to beat powerful contenders Barkhad Abdi (in Captain Philips), Bradley Cooper (in American Hustle) and two others at the Oscars on Monday morning.
“Dallas Buyers Club” is based on a true story of an addict, played by Mathew McConaughey, who smuggles much needed but illegal medication into the US for other AIDS patients.
The film, directed by Jean-Marc Vallee, has earned six Oscar nominations including best actor for McConaughey and best picture.
Meanwhile, Lupita Nyong'o won the best supporting role Oscar for her character in “12 Years A Slave” as a slave cum mistress to her owner, played by Michael Fassbender.
She had to outweigh heavyweights in the likes of Jennifer Lawrence (in American Hustle), Julia Robers (in August: Osage County) and two others for the prize.
Directed by Steve McQueen, “12 Years A Slave” is based on a true story of a free black man, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, kidnapped into slavery and forced to endure brutal subjugation for 12 years.
