EC cancels Kader Siddiqui’s candidacy

The Election Commission has cancelled the candidacy of Krishak Sramik Janata League President Kader Siddiqui for Tangail 8 by-election.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad made the decision after hearing on the appeal of Kader Siddiqui at the EC office in the capital on Saturday evening.

Kazi Rokibuddin Ahmad said: “We have decided to uphold the order of Tangail’s returning officer.”

On February 26, Abdul Kader Siddiqui was declared ineligible to contest in the Tangail 8 by-election for reasons involving loan default.

Sakhipur upazila Election Officer Habiba Akhtar ruled Kader Siddiqui illegal after ending verification of nomination papers.

Krishak Sramik Janata League President Kader Siddiqui had submitted his nomination for the Tangail 8 (Basail-Sakhipur) by-poll on February 23.

The constituency fell vacant after ruling Awami League lawmaker from the seat Shawkat Momen died in a heart attack on January 20 of this year.

The Tangail 8 by-election is scheduled to take place on March 29. The last date for submitting nomination was Sunday.
