The Mawa ferry terminal will temporarily be relocated to Simulia to facilitate the construction of Padma Bridge.
Communications Minister Obaidul Quader came up with this remark while talking to reporters after an inter-ministerial meeting on the relocation yesterday.
“A decision has also been taken for the permanent relocation of the ferry terminal at Kandipara,” said the minister.
As the work order for the construction of the main part of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project (PMBP) will start in June, the temporary relocation of the ferry terminal to Simulia will take place very soon, spending about Tk 105 crore.
The minister said the relocation would remove the obstacles towards starting the construction of the main part of the bridge, UNB reports.
Obaidul Quader also noted that more than Tk 500 crore will be needed for the permanent relocation of the ferry terminal to Kandipara and the work will start after the construction of the bridge.
The work for the permanent relocation of the ferry terminal will be done by the Shipping Ministry.
Besides, the Bridges Division, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transportation Authority (BIWTA) and the Army have been asked to put forward their recommendations within a week for checking river erosion around Kandipara, he said.
The Army will also undertake the construction of about one and a half kilometre road from Mawa to Simulia.
The meeting was attended by Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan and Water Resource Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud, held at the Secretariat with Obaidul Quader in the chair.
