BNP boycotts poll in 4 upazilas

BNP has boycotted polls in different upazila’s of Barisal, Bhola and Madaripur districts, alleging various acts of fraud have been committed, including elimination of their agents from polling centres and fake vote casting.

In Barisal, BNP has boycotted the election and called a day long hartal for Sunday in the metropolitan city and sadar upazila of the district.

City BNP President and central BNP Organising Secretary Advocate Mojibor Rahman Sarwar declared the hartal in a press conference around 11:15am on Thursday.

Mojibor Rahman Sarwar alleged that city Awami League and Chhatra League presidents along with the other members of the parties took control over almost all of the 66 vote centres at the beginning of the poll.

He said: “Ousting polling agents of the BNP-backed candidates, they started putting stamps on the ballots in front of the election officials.”

He claimed that Awami League members have cast more than 50% of the total votes at the centres.

In Bhola, BNP has boycotted the elections in Borhanuddin and Charfashion upazilas of the district.

BNP-backed chairman candidate Anwar Hossain Bhuiyan declared to boycott the poll in Borhanuddin, alleging that his agents were beaten up and oust from the polling centres.

Meanwhile, he claimed that the voters were barred from entering the centres.

On the other hand, Alamgir Hossain Maltia boycotted the election in Charfashion upazila, citing fake votes.

In Madaripur, BNP-backed candidate Kholilur Rahman Thandu Chowdhury has declared to boycott the poll in Shibchar upazila.

He alleged that his agents were beaten up and ousted from the polling centres.

Besides, BNP leaders and activists staged a demonstration demanding the election be halted in the upazila.

Later, police fired 12 rounds of rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
