A Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered death sentence and Tk50,000 fines for the eight accused in the Lalbagh – 62 Ward Commissioner Haji Muhammad Alim murder case.
Dhaka 3rd additional Metropolitan Judge Md Akhtaruzzaman pronounced the judgment.
Of the accused, Syed Ahmed, Rashid Ahmed, Farid Ahmed, Md Harun and Md Siraj were present in the hearing session, while Md Shawkat Ali, Md Shiblu and Md Kamal Hossain absconded.
Earlier, the accused fired on and attacked Haji Alim with locally made weapons for not paying their extortion near Ofiullah Hotel in Azimpur road on February 8, 1996. They also fired at his elder brother Haji Muhammad Nazim.
Later, on February 9, Md Badir Uddin Ahmed, younger brother of Haji Alim, filed a murder case with Lalbagh police station.
