Car registration to be limited

The government is likely to rein in private car registration to control the immense pressure of vehicles in the capital.

The decision not to let a family have more than one car would come shortly, Communication Minister Obaidul Quader hinted yesterday while visiting the city’s Gulistan, a key point where traffic congestion is a major problem.

Obaidul Quader said: “Too many private cars are one of the main reasons for the city’s traffic congestion. We have limited roads, but some use 8 to 10 cars at a time in the city which causes traffic jam. Most people suffer for transport shortage.”

According to the information of BRTA, the registration authority of the country, there are around 8,00,000 registered vehicles in Dhaka city. Of these, 1,93,000 are private passenger cars.

The BRTA registered 778 private cars and 105 Jeeps last January.
