Writ seeks application of Bangla everywhere

A writ petition has been lodged seeking the High Court’s directive on the authorities concerned to enforce the Bangla Bhasha Procholon Ain (Bengali Language Implementation Act,1987), in all government institutions, semi-government institutions and the courts. Supreme Court lawyer Eunus Ali Akond filed the plea written in Bangla.

The plea also sought a rule seeking explanations as to why the HC should not give direction to issue a circular by framing a guideline on the execution of the law.

Secretaries to the cabinet division, law, home and cultural ministries, Dhaka University vice-chancellor, Bangla Academy director general and Supreme Court registrar have been made respondents to the ruling.

The bench, comprising of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain are to hear on the plea Monday, said Eunus. According to the law, all the proceedings at government offices and courts in Bangladesh must be in Bangla.

However, communication of the government and semi-government offices with the foreign missions can be made in other languages.
