Mozena pleased with stride for GSP

The United States’ ambassador to Bangladesh, Dan W Mozena, is satisfied with Bangladesh’s progress on the implementation of the GSP action plan.

Mozena expressed his satisfaction at a meeting with Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Sunday, says a government handout.

In the meeting, the duo talked on the development made according to the action plan that the US formulated for Bangladesh after the status was stripped from Bangladesh following the Rana Plaza collapse.

Bangladesh has been asked to fulfill 16 conditions, including trade unions for workers and factory inspection procedures for reinstatement of the provision.

The Government of Bangladesh said 13 of the conditions have been already met and implementation of the rest would not take much time.

The remaining includes the appointment of 200 labour observers, preparing a data base with information on workers, consistency of the labor law, labor union law for the EPZ workers and the steps taken for the 19 non-compliance garments factory.

Bangladesh promised to meet all the conditions given in the action plan by March 30.

Commerce Secretary Mahbub Ahmed was also present in the meeting.

On June 27 last year, the US suspended Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) for Bangladesh because of concerns over labour rights and worker safety.
