Fourth-phase upazila polls on March 23

The fourth-phase polls to 92 upazilas under 42 districts will be held on March 23, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said yesterday.

The Tangail 8 by-election would also be held on the same date.

The CEC announced the polls schedule at a press conference at the Election Commission media centre.

According to the schedule of fourth-phase upazila poll, the last date of filing nomination paper is February 23 which will be scrutinised on February 26. The last date of withdrawal of nomination is March 6.

On January 20, Awami League MP Shawkat Momen Shahjahan died and the Tangail 8 constituency fell vacant.

According to the law, the by-poll must be held within 90 days after any seat falls vacant.

The CEC said army would also be deployed to maintain law and order and to hold the Tangail 8 by-election peacefully.

Regarding the law and order situation, the CEC said the commission had already deployed executive magistrates.

In the first phase, polls to 98 upazilas would be held on February 19 and the army would be deployed there from February 17 to 21.

The commission announced the poll schedule of 298 upazilas in three phases. It will hold polls to 477 upazilas out of 487. Polls to 117 upazilas will be held on February 27 in the second phase and 83 upazilas on March 15 in the third phase.

About the electoral code of conduct, Rakibuddin said if any candidate violated the rules and regulations, they would not be spared. He added that the commission directed its field-level officers to deal with the matter very strictly.

About the influence of political parties, he said: “Politics is a big factor in a democratic system. There will remain political influence in upazila elections, but the candidates are non-partisan to the commission.” l
