Theatrecanfund (Theatre for cancer foundation), the sister concern of Natuke Theatre Group is celebrating their fifth birth anniversary today through the staging of Thakur Ghore Ke Re. The play will be showcased at the Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy at 7pm.
The story is an adaptation of Marc Camoletti’s Don’t Dress for Dinner, translated and directed by AL Noman.
The plot centers on Samuel and Jacqueline, a not-so-happily married couple. Both of them are involved in extramarital affairs. As Jacqueline prepares to go out of town to visit her mother for the weekend, Samuel invites his girlfriend Suzanne, along with his best friend Patrick. What he does not know is that, Patrick is Jacqueline’s lover. He hires a chef, Suzette, to cater for the evening.
When Jacqueline discovers that Patrick is coming to town, she cancels her trip, causing her husband to panic. When Patrick arrives, Samuel asks
him to pretend act as Suzanne’s boyfriend. Patrick mistakes the chef Suzette as Suzanne. The resulting dinner turns into a hilarious yet complicated and slapstick comedy.
The director Al Noman said: “I have focused on each character to uphold the features of human nature and behaviours. Since everyone is playing a hidden game with one another, I made changes at the end. I compared human behaviour with wild animals. The drama has been designed on a western concept, it was my attempt to stage the production to relate with the audience.”
