A sub-inspector of Pallabi police station was closed on Monday night after the death of a youth under police custody. The death was allegedly caused by police torture.
Meanwhile, locals and dwellers of Irani Camp in Pallabi staged angry demonstrations for the second day on Monday, protesting the death and demanding punitive measures against the policeman.
A team of police led by SI Zahid Hossain of Pallabi police station picked up Md Johnny, 25, along with four other youths at a bridal function in the early hours of Sunday. He died hours after he had been picked up.
The family members of the deceased youth alleged that Johnny was tortured to death by SI Zahid following an earlier feud with him.
Imtiyaz Ahmmed, deputy commissioner of Mirpur Division, confirmed that SI Zahid Hossain was withdrawn around 9pm on Monday after the allegations from Johnny’s family.
A three-member committee was also formed to probe the allegation.
“The committee has been given three working days and measures will be taken following the probe report”, Imtiyaz Ahmmed said.
However, Ziauzzaman, officer-in-charge of Pallabi police station said Johnny died after he had sustained injuries in a clash between the youths of Irani Camp and Rahmat Camp.
