Detective ran over in Barisal

Alleged miscreants ran over a plain-clothed policeman in Barisal city on Sunday afternoon. One person was arrested after police nabbed the vehicle.

Injured Barisal Metropolitan Police Detective Branch Constable Anwar Hossain, 38, was taken to Dhaka on an aircraft in a critical condition, officials said.

Law enforcers received information that armed miscreants were in the city to loot jewellery, Barisal police Deputy Commissioner Shoeb Ahmed said.

A check-post was set up near Rupatali area, the entrance to the city, in this regard, he said.

A microbus ran over Constable Anwar when he signaled it to stop, the DC said. The microbus tried to flee from the scene before police chased it down.

He was taken to Barisal’s Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital before being flown to Dhaka, Barisal police Assistant Commissioner Vashkar Saha said.

The hospital’s Assistant Registrar Sondipon said the vehicle hit the head and the stomach of the policeman and he was in a critical condition.

Police chased down the vehicle after three-kilometres of chase, detective branch Officer-in-Charge Abdur Razzak said. Police fired three gunfire shots during the incident.

One person was nabbed from the vehicle, he said. The detainee was under interrogation.
