Detained war crimes accused Yusuf dies

The founder of Razakar force and accused Jamaat-e-Islami war criminal AKM Yusuf died at a Dhaka hospital for old age complications on Sunday.

He was brought in at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University from Kashimpur jail, Gazipur after falling sick in the morning, officials said.

“Yusuf died at 11:30am half an hour after he was admitted to the hospital,” BSMMU Director Brig Gen Abdul Mazid Bhuiyan said.

“He (Yusuf) had been suffering from several old-age complications, including heart and blood pressure problems,” the official said.

The death, under police custody, was also confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune by Yusuf’s lawyer Tazul Islam.

Earlier, the International Crimes Tribunal ordered jail authorities to ensure adequate medical attention considering the health status of the accused.

Senior Jamaat leader Yusuf was indicted in August 2012 over 13 charges of crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War of Bangladesh.

His case was transferred to Tribunal 2 in July last year for quick disposal. The deposition in this case was completed on February 5 this month and was awaiting the argument sessions.
