It is 43 years after the Liberation War, the identity of a martyr’s wife was yesterday revealed in Fenchuganj upazila of the district.
The identified woman is Josna Begum, 62, a widow who was leading a life of deprivation.
“Chetona ’71 Habiganj” – an organisation working for realisation of women freedom fighters’ right – recognised Josna as the wife of martyr Md Shoyeb Ali Khan, who was a schoolteacher, and went to war.
After her husband left the house, Josna became the target of the Pakistan army who picked her up from the house and put her to torture. Her right leg was severely injured.
She became alone with her only child Milad Hossain Khan after her husband went left the house for Liberation War.
After getting release from the captivity of Pakistanis, she returned to her father’s village in Sylhet.
Josna said she did not get any treatment for her leg. Three years ago she got admitted to a private hospital for old age complications.
She added: “I cannot walk properly. I am faced with many old-age complications. I never got any aid.”
She went on saying that Keya Chowdhury, secretary to “Chetona ’71 Habiganj” admitted her to hospital.
“I got respect. For the first time I got admitted into a government hospital.”
Mariyan Chowdhury, senior vice-president of Sector’s Commander’s Forum for Sylhet unit, has also been providing support to Josna.
Keya Chowdhury said after working with four freedom fighters in last year they came to know about Josna Begum.
“We admitted her to Osmani Medical Collage Hospital after being surprised that she never got any treatment for 43 years,” she added.
The organisation would take initiative to introduce her as a freedom fighter’s wife after completion of her treatment, Keya said.
Doctors said her right leg was severely injured, but she didn’t receive any treatment during that time.
A long-term medication would be necessary to get her cured, added the doctors.
