A leader of Matshajibi Dal, a front of the BNP, was shot in gunfight with law enforcers in Shyamnagar upazila, Satkhira on Tuesday, police said.
Jamal Hossain Faruque, 32, son of Ashraful Islam Sardar from the upazila, was an accused on the run in several cases of sabotage, police said.
Law enforcers nabbed Faruque upon a tip-off on Tuesday morning, Shyamnagar police Officer-in-Charge Sagir Mia said. His supporters intervened when he was being brought in.
“They exploded three crude bombs and fired three rounds of gunfire at police. Jamal was shot on his leg when police fired back 10 rounds of gunfire.”
Two constables Milon Das and Ferdous Hassan were injured in the battle, the OC said. Faruque was later admitted to Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex for treatments.
However, family claimed law enforcers detained Faruque from his residence on Monday night. Later, they heard he was shot during a “gunfight.”
Kashimari union BNP Secretary Waliullah said Faruque was the organising secretary of Matshajibi Dal in the union. “Police nabbed him on Monday night.”
Satkhira is believed to be a stronghold of the Jamaat-e-Islami and listed one of the “vulnerable” areas of the country where specialised forces are cracking down.
