Bollywood’s Gunday inspired by Bangladesh’s Liberation War

Filmmaker Ali Abbas Zafar, director of the upcoming film Gunday got inspiration from his father’s stories, which he recreated for the film. Not many know that Ali’s father was in Bangladesh throughout the 1971 Liberation War. In an interview, he said: “My father, who was present during the war use to narrate me all his first-hand experiences of that time, which have always stayed with me.”

Ali decided to recreate similar scenes and situations which actually prevailed during the war of Bangladesh for Gunday. The movie tells the story of two refugees played by actors Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor and is set in the backdrop of 1970’s. The film also features Priyanka Chopra and Irrfan Khan.

The film is about Bikram and Bala, who live their lives on the wrong side of the law, becoming gun carriers and coal bandits. It is set to release on February 14, 2014.

It will also be released in Bangla, with a full Bangla song composed by Bappi Lahiri. This will be the first Indian film to have its trailer premier at the Dubai International Film Festival.
