Two factories and a four-storied residential building have been gutted in a devastating fire that broke out at a soap factory at Kosaituli of the capital’s Bongshal area on Saturday.
A total of 11 units of firefighters, police, factory workers and local people brought the fire under control with their three-hour joint efforts.
The cause of the fire, extent of damage and casualty could not be known immediately.
Inspector Abul Hasan, officer-in-charge (OC-Investigation) of Bongshal police station, said: “The fire originated at the soap factory housed in a tin shed building. Later, it engulfed a nearby hanger factory and a four-storied residential building.
The residents of the building were evacuated immediately after the fire originated around 6:00pm,” he added.
However, the police official could not ascertain the cause of the fire.
Irin Parveen, duty officer of the FSCD, said 11 units of the Fire Service and Civil Defense (FSCD) rushed in and brought the fire under control around 9:00pm.
She said the fire spread to other factories and buildings as high flammable materials like chemicals had been used and kept inside the factories.
Hundreds of people thronged the spot to witness the catastrophe of the fire hampering their dousing operation, she added.
