A Jubo Dal leader was killed in a gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Dharnapur village in Charshahi union of Lakshmipur district early Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Didarul Alam, 40, general secretary of Jubo Dal’s Charshahi union unit.
Sources said the gunfight took place at Dharnapur village around 1:30am.
RAB 11 Major Shahed said: “Criminals opened fire on RAB personnel when we were conducting a drive to detain some local criminals.”
In retaliation, RAB fired back. The gunfight between them left Didar Bahini Chief Didarul Alam dead on the spot, he added.
Major Shahed said they fired some 60 rounds of bullets while the criminals fired 40 rounds targeting the RAB personnel.
Later, RAB personnel handed over the body to Sadar Hopsital.
Lakshmipur sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Iqbal Hossian said various cases including murder and extortion were filed against Didarul in different police stations.
