A Jamaat-e-Islami leader was killed in gunfight in Meherpur Sadar upazila early on Monday, what police said.
The dead was Tarek Mohammad Saiful Islam, 35, son of Haji Samiruddin and the general secretary of Meherpur district Jamaat-e-Islami, police said.
Meherpur police Superintendent AKM Nahidul Islam said detectives picked up Saiful from Sadar upazila around Sunday evening in charges of violece cases.
The Jamaat leader was accused in nine cases of violence during the recent agitation, he said. Law enforcers conducted a drive in Sadar upon his information.
Later, he died in a gunfight with police in Shahanghat area around 3am, the SP said. One light gun, two bullets and five crude bombs were recovered from scene.
The body was sent to Meherpur Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
