Two suspects of a police murder case died in a gunfight during a raid in the port city of Chittagong in the early hours of Wednesday, law enforcers said.
Professional hijackers Rajib, 26 and Nasir, 27, died in gunfight in the Halishahar area around 5am, Halishahar police Officer-in-Charge Shahjahan Khan said.
They were both suspects in the murder of policeman Faridul Islam which took place on Monday, he said. The raid was carried out to detain the killers.
Halishahar and Doublemooring police carried out a joint drive led by Chittagong police (West) Additional Deputy Commissioner Tanvir Arafat, the OC told the Dhaka Tribune.
The miscreants opened fire when they saw the police, he said. The police were compelled to open fire and the ensuing “gunfight” endured for about 30 minutes.
Police later recovered the two bodies from the spot with bullet wounds to the chest. One light gun, four rounds of cartridges and five daggers were also recovered.
The victims were declared dead when they were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Earlier on Monday, policeman Faridul Islam, 45, died after being stabbed by miscreants near the Agrabad Bank Colony area of the port city. A case was filed with Doublemooring police in this regard.
