One died and at least 25 others were injured when Bangladesh Chhatra League and Islami Chhatra Shibir men clashed at Chittagong University on Sunday.
Witnesses said the campus premises turned into virtually a battlefield as the two groups chased at each other in presence of law enforcers in afternoon.
One died after being taken to the hospital, Chittagong Medical College Hospital police outpost Sub Inspector Jahirul Islam said. Details were not available.
Eighteen people were nabbed from the scene after the violence at campus premises, Hathazari circle police Assistant Superintendent AFM Nizamuddin said.
The environment at Chittagong University campus was tense and the authorities were in a meeting after the violence.
Clashes ensued in the afternoon after Chhatra League men paraded and attacked Shah Amanat Hall protesting a previous attack on one of their activists.
They locked in clashes with Shibir activists which lasted for over an hour. Several crude bombs were exploded at the scene.
Though Shibir initially claimed three deaths, later their campus unit General Secretary Mostafizur Rahman said one of their activist died in the clash.
Chhatra League claimed that 10 of their activists were injured including three with critical stab injuries. Shibir claimed 15 injuries.
Chhatra League attacked protesting the assault on their Organising Secretary Jalal Ahmed, whose tendons were severed by miscreants in Sylhet.
