CEC: Call for resistance led to violence

10th parliamentary polls boycott by BNP and its call for polls resistance had led to violence, said Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad.

On Saturday, he said:  “A big party did not participate in the polls and announced to resist it. This has led to violent consequences across the country.”

He made the comment after holding a meeting with authorities of the law enforcing agencies and the returning officers of the re-polling constituencies.

The 10th parliamentary polls were held on January 5 amid boycott of BNP.

Before polls, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia made call to resist the polls at any cost. Tarique Rahman, BNP's vice chairman and Khaleda's son also made the same call.

Referring to polls-centric violence the CEC said: “Despite violence, we successfully carried out the 10th parliamentary polls apart from a few stray incidents.”

But, strict security measures will be taken in the re-polls of the eight constituencies that will take place on January 16,” the CEC uttered warning.

The high-ups from Bangladesh Army, Border Guard Bangladesh, Rapid Action Battalion and the police administration were present.
