Police assault cricketer Sohag Gazi

National team cricketer Sohag Gazi was allegedly assaulted by a policeman in front of his residence at Rupnagar yesterday.

Witnesses said a microbus carrying a patrol team from the Rupnagar police station was obstructed by the car of the cricketer around 4pm, parked adjacent to his house on Road 7.

The policemen were angered when the driver of Sohag’s car delayed in freeing the road.

As Sohag got out of his car, the policemen - led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Md Wahidul Islam - locked in an altercation and the ASI slapped Sohag at one stage . The law enforcers also attempted to pick the cricketer and his chauffer.

The policemen calmed down when locals revealed Sohag’s identity.

When contacted, Mirpur division Deputy Commissioner Imtiyaz Ahmmed said there had been a misunderstanding.

“The driver of Sohag Gazi’s car did not move the vehicle even after the policemen blew the horn repeatedly. The patrol team could not move, as the car was parked blocking the road,” he said.

The DC said he had not received any complaint about the incident as of 11pm.
