A 10-year-old boy was choked to death while playing with a rope inside a shanty in the capital’s Pallabi area yesterday.
He was identified as Ajoy Das, the son of a cobbler.
According to neighbours, the deceased’s mother Josna Das said Ajoy was playing with a rope hung from a wooden structure inside their shanty. He got entangled with the rope and choked to death.
She said: “No one was at home when the incident occurred. I went outside to collect wood, leaving him inside where he was playing. My younger son Sanjoy was also playing outside the house.”
Hearing chaos, Josna came back to her shanty and found neighbours taking care of her son.
Ajoy was admitted to a nearby hospital in a critical condition around 12pm. He was shifted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital at a later stage, where he was declared dead around 1pm.
He was a student of an NGO-run school in the slum.
