Ferry services resumed on the Maowa-Kewrakandi river route around 10am yesterday after 10 hours of disruption.
AM Baten, assistant manager of Kawrakandi Launch Terminal in Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) said ferry movement on the river route had been stopped due to poor visibility caused by dense fog.
Passengers were facing problems due to suspension of speedboat, trawler and launch services.
Newspapers could not be reached in different areas under southern part as the trawler services were suspended.
Ambulances, vehicles of emergency medicines and courier services remained stuck at the terminals, creating traffic congesion on roads on both sides of the river.
Meanwhile, a man was injured and five vehicles were damaged as two ferries collided head-on on the route in the river Padma because of dense fog.
The injured person was undergoing treatment at a private clinic in Maowa.
According to sources at BIWTC, Ro Ro ferry Shahmokdum and ferry Kakoli bound for Mawa collided head-on in the river, damaging car of Rafikul Islam, superintendent of police, Sariyatpur and injuring a person.
Five vehicles were also damaged during the accident.
During the accident, 17 trucks, five light vehicles and an elephant were on board in Ro Ferry Shahmokhdum.
Besides, Ferry Kakoli was carrying 19 different types of vehicles.
Chandra Roy, assistant manager of BIWTC, said the accident occurred because of poor visibility caused by dense fog. He, however, said a probe commitee was formed to find out the cause of the collision.
