Joy: Government successful in preventing violence

The government was successful in preventing violence across the country, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's son Sajeeb Wazed Joy said after the parliamentary polls.

“Only 160 or so polling centres were affected out of 18,000,” Joy said in a status published on his official Facebook page after Sunday midnight.

“I have no doubt that if the BNP-Jamaat had not continued their terror attacks voter turnout would cross 50%,” he said adding that the average turnout is generally 60%.

He slammed the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami for “setting fire to several polling centres and innocent civilians. They beat one election officer to death and smashed the hands of another.”

“I would like to thank the voters who came out to vote in spite of the BNP-Jamaat's terrorism. You have taken a stand for democracy against fundamentalism and terrorism,” Joy said.

“I would also like to thank Awami League leaders and activists. It has been a tremendous struggle in the face of terror,” he added.

At least 16 people have died and scores others were injured during the 10th parliamentary elections, without the participation of BNP, held on Sunday.
