Ballots burnt in Jamaat strongholds

Miscreants set fire on election materials including ballot papers in two districts on Saturday afternoon.

Torching incidents took place in Sadullapur upazila, Gaibandha and Satkania upazila, Chittagong.

Of the two upazilas, the later is widely known as Jamaat-e-Islami’s stronghold. Sadullapur is adjacent to Sundarganj upazila where Jamaat’s strong presence is perceived.

On Saturday, miscreants launched an attack at Sadaha Adarsha Mahila Madrasa under Satkania upazila and torched ballot papers and two ballot boxes at around 5pm.

Satkania police station Officer-in-Charge Md Khaled Hossain confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.

The miscreants also torched a truck, used for carrying election materials, which was stationed in front of Sadaha Mohammadia Khairia Madrasa centre.

Assistant Returning Officer Md Shariful Islam said miscreants set fire to the truck after the election materials had been unloaded.

In Gaibandha, miscreants set ballot papers on fire at three polling centres on Saturday afternoon.

The polling stations are Kunja Mohipur Primary School, Taznagar Girl's High School and Taznagar Primary School centres under Edilpur union of Sadullapur upazila. 

Miscreants torched the ballot papers at Kunja Mohipur primary school after the presiding officer and his other polling officers reached there around 3pm.

Ballot papers were also torched at Taznagar Primary School centre soon after the election officials reached at the centre at 5pm.

Assistant Returning Officer and UNO Syed Forhad Hossain confirmed the Dhaka Tribune about the asron attacks.

He said a group of miscreants snatched the ballot papers as soon as the presiding officer reached at the centre at around 3pm. Then they set fire on the ballot papers.

The miscreants also assaulted the polling officers of the centre including Presiding Officer Shafiqul Islam.

Some 10 polling stations were also torched by the miscreants in different places of three upazilas of the district on Saturday.

In 2001 parliament polls the Jamaat candidate, Shahjahan Chowdhury, secured win in Satkania. In 2008 polls Shahjahan was defeated by Oli Ahmed. In 2001 national polls it was the Jamaat-e-Islami candidate, Moulana A Aziz, that defeated the opponent.
