Blockaders beat up 6 police men

Six police personnel, including the officer-in-charge of Palashbari police station, were seriously injured after a group of blockaders swooped in on them and proceeded to mercilessly beat them at Sabdin Nayabazar area under the district’s Palashbari upazila on Friday afternoon.

The injured are Palashbari police station OC Nasir Uddin Mondal, Inspector (Investigation) Golam Mostafa, Sub-Inspector Billal Hossain and Constables Gobinda Chandra Das, Mizanur Rahman and Sahadur Rahman.

The injured police personnel said a gang of local blockaders suddenly assaulted a team of Palashbari police officers while they were on their way to visiting the polling centers in Barishal union under the upazila around 5pm.

The criminals assaulted the police personnel with sticks when they reached the Nayabazaar area of the union, leaving them critically injured.

The agitated blockaders also vandalised two police motorcycles and then set them on fire.

Additional Police Super Mosarrof Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune that upon being informed by locals, law enforcers reached the scene to rescue the injured officers.

Police managed to bring the situation under control and carried the injured law enforcers to a local hospital, he added. Later, Inspector (Investigation) Golam Mostafa and Constables Mizanur Rahman and Sahadur Rahman were admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital as their condition stated to deteriorate, he further said.

When contacted, Superintendent of Police M Shajid Hussain said he had caught wind of the incident and visited the scene along with deputy commissioner M Zahurul Islam Rhohel.
