HT Imam: No guarantee of 100% peaceful polls

Mentioning that Awami League was determined to hold a peaceful elections, Awami League election steering committee co-chairman HT Imam however said the government could not give the guarantee to hold the 10th parliamentary elections in 100% peaceful manner.

He said: “We are not giving the guarantee for holding the election in 100%peaceful manner. But, we would try to keep a peaceful environment at the polling centres to ensure the security of the voters.

The ruling party leader made the statement after one and half hour meeting with the chief election commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad at the Election Commission secretariat.

Mentioning about the non-stop blockade programme called by BNP-led 18-party alliance, he said: “Despite of the agitation programme, we will keep a peaceful atmosphere during the elections. But, untoward situations can be occurred in one or two places.”

Regarding the security issues of the voters, HT Imam said sufficient law enforcers would be deployed across the country in order to ensure that the voter could cast their vote in a festive and safe environment.

He claimed that Jamaat-Shibir is conducting the countrywide anarchy to foil the ongoing trial of the war criminals adding that Jamaat was trying to create instability in the country by putting the gun on BNP’s shoulder.

When asked about any chance of consensus, he said the door was always open for consensus but the opposition must stop their violence activities first. It is not possible to run dialogue and violence at a time, he added.
