A Jamaat-e-Islami leader was killed in a gunfight with joint forces at Rajnagar of Meherpur on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Jabbar, 52, of Hijuli village of Sadarupazila.
Jabbar was a member of Amjupi union parisad and ward president of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh.
Meherpur Sadar police station officer-in-charge Riazul Islam confirmed the death incident during the gunfight.
Riazul said: “Police arrested Jamaat leader Abdul Jabbar on Monday morning from his Hijuli village home and took him to the police station for interrogation. During quizzing, Jabbar admitted that Jamaat-Shibir men were engaged in sabotage activities in the district."
Later, the joint forces along with Jabbar conducted a drive in the village on Monday midnight. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, Jamaat-Shibir men hurled crude bombs and opened fire at them.
In retaliation, the joint forces also opened fire triggering a gunfight. After the gunfight, Jamaat leader Jabbar found injured on the spot. Later, he was admitted to Meherpur Sadar Hospital where duty-doctor declared him dead around 2 am, said the OC.
The members of joint forces recovered five crude bombs, one gun and one round of bullet from the spot, he added.
